Visiting Bhutan and meeting its birds feels like a pilgrimage to us. Once again, we were on this pilgrimage—an extensive 10-day journey stretching from the western to the southeastern parts of the country. Teamed up with our trusted friends, Lakhey and Jigme, we set forth in search of the Birds of Bhutan. (Read my previous blog post series on Bhutan to know more about my friends.)

With our route map finalised and travel dates fixed, we landed in Paro, where our good friend Lakhey was waiting to pick us up. As planned, he drove us straight to Thimphu. Our quest for the Birds of Bhutan was to begin the next day from there. We spent the day leisurely exploring Thimphu, visiting a few spots here and there, and called it a day.

We started early the next morning—after all, “the early bird catches the worm.” In our case, we were out to catch birds (with our cameras, of course!). 😀 Joined by our friend and birding guide Jigme, we took the familiar route from Thimphu towards Punakha via Dochula, continuing our search for the Birds of Bhutan from our list.

This post, as well as the rest of the series, will be a pictorial journey featuring the Birds of Bhutan. Each post will cover the sightings of a particular day, continuing the series through our travels across the beautiful hills of Bhutan. Enjoy birding with us as we explore this enchanting land!
